Members of Boy Scout Troop 119 salute the American flag.
A local Boy Scout troop, with the assistance of Chattahoochee Technical College’s campus police and facilities departments, hosted a U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony at the North Metro Campus on Thursday, April 28.
Flag burning takes place when an American flag is deemed too marred and tattered to continue to fly. Because it is never acceptable for Old Glory to be thrown away, as it would be a sign of disrespect, the American flag is instead burned – a more honorable option. The flag burning service began with reciting the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Communication and Veteran Services Coordinator Dr. Barry Munday followed with a reading of the poem “I Am Old Glory.”
Boy Scout Troop No. 119, led by Scoutmaster David Ririe and Officer Sean Lamb, closed the ceremony with the retirement of the flag, which included carefully cutting the field of blue stars as well as the red and white stripes and carefully placing them on a fire.
