(Acworth, Ga. – Sept. 11, 2013) When the new version of the GED is launched in January of 2014, those who have not completed and passed the current version exams will be starting over again.

Those who do not successfully complete all five parts by the end of 2013 will be required to start over again in 2014 with the new GED test in order to receive their high school credential. Partial scores from the current exam cannot be carried over to the new 2014 test.

“Life happens to all of us,” said Chattahoochee Technical College Executive Director Jon Collins. “There are children, jobs and responsibilities that mount up in life and prevent us from doing some of the things we meant to do. We hear that all time. ‘I was going to take those last sections. I just needed to…’”

Chattahoochee Technical College offers free classes to prepare for the exams. The first step is a pretest to determine a person’s readiness and needed areas of instruction.

“We will give them a practice test, which is a pretty good predictor of an actual GED score,” Collins said. “It tells us where the student needs to focus his or her time and energy. We don’t send students into the test to fail. We’re preparing them to pass the test and move on with more education or a career.”

The new assessment will continue to provide adults the opportunity to earn a high school credential, but it goes further by measuring career- and college-readiness skills that are the focus of today’s curriculum and tomorrow’s success. According to the GED Testing Service, the test is being updated because GED test graduates must remain competitive with students who complete their high school credentials in a traditional manner. Evidence suggests that test-takers who demonstrate fluency with the skills measured in the new assessment will be better prepared for what they plan to do with their lives.
